- Problem 1: Speaking Mandarin/ not speaking English in class.
- o ONLY speaking English in class is an unrealistic expectation, especially for first time learners and I understand that first time learners will have the tendency to resort back to their mother language but what I do require the K- Class to do is TRY. K- Class needs to try to keep the class an English only environment, especially during class time.
- Solution 1: Peer correction/ encouragement- students know that they can do their part to remind their classmate[s] to speak English when anyone resorts back to speaking their mother language.
- Solution 2: Disciplinary action, positive/ negative reinforcement - if students refuse to TRY to speak English, they will lose points. But on the contrary, when they are making an effort to speak English, points will be awarded to them.
- Solution 3: Practice and repetition- constant exposure and reoccurring topics are great ways to get students comfortable with the English language. Words, phrases and sentences they use everyday will start to become incorporated when they make the effort to speak English.
- Solution 4: Storytelling/ sing and dance- this is one of the easiest ways to make learning English fun and exciting for young students. Students can learn simple words, phrases and sentences through a happy tune or a story that he/ she enjoys.
