  • Problem 1: Speaking Mandarin/ not speaking English in class.
    • o   ONLY speaking English in class is an unrealistic expectation, especially for first time learners and I understand that first time learners will have the tendency to resort back to their mother language but what I do require the K- Class to do is TRY.  K- Class needs to try to keep the class an English only environment, especially during class time.
  • Solution 1: Peer correction/ encouragement- students know that they can do their part to remind their classmate[s] to speak English when anyone resorts back to speaking their mother language.
  • Solution 2: Disciplinary action, positive/ negative reinforcement - if students refuse to TRY to speak English, they will lose points. But on the contrary, when they are making an effort to speak English, points will be awarded to them.
  • Solution 3: Practice and repetition- constant exposure and reoccurring topics are great ways to get students comfortable with the English language. Words, phrases and sentences they use everyday will start to become incorporated when they make the effort to speak English.
  • Solution 4: Storytelling/ sing and dance- this is one of the easiest ways to make learning English fun and exciting for young students. Students can learn simple words, phrases and sentences through a happy tune or a story that he/ she enjoys.

  • Problem 2: Taking your own initiative/ taking responsibility for yourself and others.
    • o   At this age, some students are not use to being in an environment with many other children so it is important for us to help them realize that they are now apart of a class. They have classmates, which means they are now a part of a group/ team.
  • Solution 1: Disciplinary action, positive/ negative reinforcement- students need to clean up after themselves and each other, remember to bring all supplies need for class or they will get points taken away. On the flip side, if they do this they will be given points for their good behavior.
  • Solution 2: Routines, students need to turn in their homework and communications FIRST when they enter the classroom. They know this routine and anyone who has not turned in their work or forgot a book will first get a warning and if the behavior continues, I will notify Jamie or have a request to have one of the Chinese teachers notify the parent.
  • Solution 3: Make it a song or game- we have a clean up song that we sing to try to make cleaning up less of a chore. When everyone sings, everyone cleans even if it is not a mess that he/ she made.

  • Problem 3: Learning how to be a part of a group/ sharing, taking turns, etc…
    • o   Similarly to the explanation of problem, at this age, some students are not use to being in an environment with many other children so it is important for us to help them realize that they are now apart of a class, this means sharing, learning to take turns while being nice and courteous to others.
  • Solution 1: Exposure- students will eventually see that if they are constantly mean, do not share and have a poor attitude that they will isolate themselves from other students. Constant exposure in an environment that promotes learning to be a part of a group, sharing, taking turns etc… is the first step to ride any bad behaviors that were developed from lack of exposure.
  • Solution 2: Rewards system- our school provides points for students and these points can buy students some pretty great toys or snacks. All students especially K- Class knows how to earn these point. In their case, points are not just taken away or given based on their English skills or academics, they can also get them from being a nice person.
